An Upper Endoscopy—medically known as an EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy)—is a safe, endoscopic procedure that allows me to directly visualize the lining of your upper gastrointestinal tract, including your esophagus, stomach, and the first part of your small intestine (duodenum). This is frequently done for diagnostic and screening purposes as well as to treat problems such as difficulty swallowing, GI bleeding, polyps, and others.
Whether you are preparing for your procedure or managing your post-procedure recovery at home, we hope this portal provides clear, accessible guidance to ensure your experience is smooth and stress-free.
1. You MUST Have an Adult Driver: Because you will receive intravenous sedation to keep you completely comfortable during the procedure, you cannot drive yourself home. A responsible adult driver must accompany you, stay at the facility, or be available to drive you home. Rideshare services (Uber/Lyft) or public taxis are generally not permitted unless accompanied by an adult companion.
2. Strict NPO (Nil per os = Nothing by mouth) status: Your stomach must be completely clear of contents in order to reduce aspiration risk and to see the lining clearly. Do not eat or drink anything other than a small sip of water with medication on the morning of the procedure or your procedure must be cancelled or delayed per guidelines.
