A colonoscopy is a safe, routine, and highly effective outpatient procedure that allows your doctor to examine the inner lining of your large intestine (colon and rectum) using a thin, flexible tube equipped with a tiny camera. Colonoscopy is the gold standard for colon cancer screening and surveillance but is also performed in diagnostic evaluation of problems like GI bleeding, diarrhea, abdominal pain, etc.

1. You MUST Have an Adult Driver: Because you will receive intravenous sedation to keep you completely comfortable during the procedure, you cannot drive yourself home. A responsible adult driver must accompany you, stay at the facility, or be available to drive you home. Rideshare services (Uber/Lyft) or public taxis are generally not permitted unless accompanied by an adult companion.
2. Strict Bowel Prep Compliance: Your colon must be completely clear of stool in order to see the lining clearly. A clean colon allows for a safe detection and removal of small polyps. Follow your assigned prep instructions exactly as written.
